We had a very successful Ohio State Parks On The Air. We set up a single station at Adams Lake State Park. We used a simple 40 meter dipole antenna held up with fence posts about 3 feet off the ground. It made for a great NVIS antenna. Despite being located in one of the southernmost parks in Ohio, we contacted 40 other parks. Three of the parks were within 60 miles of our location.
It seems that the antenna had never been told about antenna theory. An NIVS is not supposed to work that close to the ground, but it did just fine. The NVIS antenna is also not supposed to make contacts at distance, but when we called CQ, we worked stations as far south as Alabama and as far north as Toronto! Never let your antenna read about antenna theory!
